Founded in the early 1700s, Beaufort was one of North Carolina's largest ports
during the American Revolution, boasting a history characterized by the stuff
of legend and folklore. In the 18th century, many captains and pirates established
homes on the waterfront, including the notorious Blackbeard. For chilling tales
of murderous pirates and haunted houses, take an evening tour of Blackbeard's
house and the Old Burying Ground, a cemetery over 300 years old. A number of
other historic sites are still standing today, and visitors have the chance
to take a docent-led tour that visits the 18th-century home of a wealthy plantation
owner, the 1797 Carteret County Courthouse, the 1829 County Jail and a mid-19th-century apothecary. Another popular Beaufort attraction is the North Carolina
Maritime Museum, which highlights the salient points of North Carolina's maritime
and coastal natural history through several exhibits.
